I still enjoy setting New Year’s resolutions. There is something about the fresh start of new goals. I take my resolutions seriously, but also recognize that setting a path doesn’t guarantee that I will take that path, as demonstrated by a few of my unreached resolutions from 2008.
A good example of this is an article [...]

Christmas Prayer
“Help us, O God, to rightly remember the birth of Jesus that we may share in the songs of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and the worship of the magi. Close the door of hate and open the door of love around the world. Let kindness come with every gift and good desire [...]
Christmas Eve Sunset
A perfect ending to a rainy Christmas Eve, and a perfect prelude to Christmas Day.
The dawn will come.
Incarnation: God Becomes Embryo
This past Sunday, Krista and I were discussing an intriguing thought about the Incarnation. When we say that God became flesh, we think of Jesus as a man, walking the streets, healing people, eating real food, and experiencing the emotions that come with being a human.
But if God became flesh, then God also became an [...]
Best Of
Here are the highlights from 2008 Barmer Week 50 (or Week 12 if you are counting by our pregnancy). We got together with some good friends this week, and while at dinner we tried an excellent 2006 Pinot Noir called Four Graces, from Willamette Valley, OR. If you like a good Pinot, this is a [...]
Hold Your Breath

Best Of
I’m starting a weekly “Best Of” posting where I share a “Barmer Top 4 or 5″ of sorts. I hate to admit that this was inspired by Tim at Black Coffee Reflections, who I’ve now mentioned in two posts in a row (I may have to pay royalties soon if I’m not careful).
It’s been a [...]
Are Teenagers Pushed Too Hard?
Tim has posted a thoughtful article at Black Coffee Reflections about teenagers and whether or not they are being presented with a false dream to pursue…
My main problem is the “dream” that we sell our kids. As you know, it goes something like this: If you get good grades, and are balanced with music, sports, [...]
Looking for Questions
Saw this marvelous excerpt from Rainer Maria Rilke after deciding on the new title for this blog:
I beg you…to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could [...]
Advent Books
Bobby Webb asked me if I had any recommendations for Advent books, so I thought I’d post a few that we have (re)discovered lately. Please add to the comments any recommendations you have for worthwhile readings during Advent.
The Holy Bible
I should start here. I’m finding it much too easy to read other things without spending [...]
